Handmade Monday #5: Welcome

Handmade Monday is a little thing which happens here every week.  It’s all about spreading the word about handmade and sharing creativity.  If you have a blog and would like to join in, you’ll find the instructions at the bottom of this post.

If you don’t have a blog, you can still join in – grab a coffee and that last slice of cake (someone has to eat it :-) ) and have a browse of the blogs listed.

If you’ve been paying attention recently, you’ll know I started working on some new style plaques made from a chunky wood:

Yesterday I did some quick planning on paper to check the sizing and spacing of painted letters:

I then painted the wording onto the plaque freehand.  I prefer working freehand as I think the finished lettering is livelier:

I left room for a little heart at the end:

welcome with heart

I added blobs to the ends of the letters:

This morning I completed the lettering with my outliner pen:

Tomorrow I’ll finish it off with some string and a little bow:

Then it’ll be ready to list on the website.  These plaques measure 25cm in length and there will be the option to have them waxed, making them suitable for light outdoor use (in a sheltered position or seasonal).  They’ll be available for £14.99 + £2.50 P&P, which is a little bit more than I envisaged as there’s more work involved than I originally anticipated - especially all the sanding.

I’m expecting to add more designs over the coming weeks.  If you have any special requests, do please let me know.  And to see them in person, if you’re not too far away, visit me here on the weekend of 26th and 27th March:

It’s over to you now!  I’d love to see what you’ve been up to this week.  If you’d like to join in with Handmade Monday, please:

1. Pop a link to this blog post on your blog :-)

2. Add your link below using the linky tool :-)

And if you don’t have a blog of your own?  You can still join in by clicking the links as people add them – you may well be inspired to make or buy something new.   If nothing else, it makes for an interesting few minutes seeing what everyone’s been up to!

Oh – and don’t forget my giveaway competition!  You can enter up until midnight (UK time) on Monday – more info here: http://www.1stuniquegifts.co.uk/blog/2011/02/50000-visitors-and-a-giveaway/

  2. Wendy says:

Thanks for popping by Caroline! The painting always comes alive with the outlining – I always think it looks totally rubbish until it’s outlined.

    I love organising it – it’s a lot of fun :-)

  3. Hi Wendy, I think these are going to be a great addition to your range. I look forward to meeting you again at The Great British Craft Bazaar :)

  4. Wendy says:

    • Wendy says:

Thank you – I’m hoping they’ll work well with the rest of the range and offer people something a bit different.

Thanks for joining in with Handmade Monday :-)

  6. Lorna says:

Loving the new plaques! So simple yet work so well! (I need to sort a new job out so I can myself some of your goodies!) x

    • Wendy says:

Haha, that has got to be one of the best reasons I’ve ever heard for getting a new job!

Seriously though, massive compliment so thank you :-)

  7. Sue says:

Hi Wendy, Lovin the new plaques! Hope the craft fairs go well for you. I have one of yours on the door of my craft room telling people to keep out. Love it! Hugs Sue x

Brilliant, thanks for letting me know Sue – those craft room plaques have been very popular! Thanks for coming and joining in with Handmade Monday :-)

  8. Kat says:

These new plaques are excellent. Can see another Christmas gift marked off the list already. Great idea!

  9. Sue says:

Hi Wendy, thanks for coming to take a look at my blog. I had made a post and linked back to here, but I scheduled it to post this morning, as it was written very late last night. Thanks again for providing these links, I’ve had a lovely morning seeing what everyone has been up to lately.
    Hugs Sue x

  10. I love your new plaques – they really look great. Thanks for organising Handmade Monday again – got myself in gear and have taken part :)

  11. I love you new plaques. They do look great.
I would never be brave enough to do free hand like that. They are Fab.

  12. Sarah says:

Just wanted to say thanks for another Handmade Monday!! Am late in submitting today (usually try to do it on a sunday)
    Really love your plaques….so beautiful
    Have a great week
    Sarah x

  13. Jenny says:

Hi Wendy – LOVE the new plaques! They remind me of some slate ones I saw, with the house number and then a personalised ‘stick people’ family – Mum, Dad, girl, boy, dog! Is that something you could maybe do on your ‘Welcome’ plaques? I would be interested in buying one…!
Hope you’re well and busy x

  14. Dee says:

Hi Wendy, i have been keeping up with your plaque making on facebook :) great work!! You must have a very steady hand for the writing! Mine would end up un-readable I think!
I hope it’s ok to join the Handmade Monday, it will help me get my bum in gear to update my blog!! Off to have a nosey at everybody elses now, thank you :) xx

    • Wendy says:

Dee, I’m amazed that my hand is steady because at times I am the world’s clumsiest person! I can be personalising a plaque at a craft fair (in front of a customer) and the pen finds itself being propelled across the room. Yet I can write the names ok. Weird!

It’s more than ok to join Handmade Monday – it’s lovely to have you here :-)

Not sure what’s going on on facebook – is it me or someone else? I’m a bit rubbish on facebook!!

  15. Wendy says:

Thank you everyone for your links and comments so far. I’m loving popping over to all the blogs and seeing what people have been making :-)

  16. Susie says:

I am running so late today, it took me so long to write this morning! I love your signs. I can’t believe you can free hand that. I can barely free hand my own name! :) And I’m seriously not kidding. If we had to do all of our blogging by hand you would not be able to even read me. Sadly.

    • Wendy says:

I have days when it takes me ages to do a blog post. Other days when I polish off a few at once! You’re here, that’s the main thing!

I suppose the handwriting must be my “thing”. I do it much better freehand than if I tried to measure it out, it would look stilted that way. Anyway, each to his/her own – we all have different skills, and that makes the world more interesting.

Thanks for popping by again :-)

  17. lisa says:

What a long read today. Well done the list is getting bigger!
Look the plaques wendy. Great idea for outside.
Thanks for hosting again, you are doing a grand job x

    • Wendy says:

Thank you – it’s great that it’s growing, love that. It’s good for everyone and I love the mix of crafts, designs and ideas.

  18. Anita Mistry says:

Hello hope you’ve had a good weekend. I came over yesterday but didn’t leave a comment as I’d not written my blog – done now.

These will be just as popular I’m sure and I love doing things freehand makes it more individual. I’ve started making a list of things I want to buy for pressies well that’s my excuse – the only thing is I want something from everyone :)

Hope you have a good week – I’m off to see what everyone else has been up to.

    • Wendy says:

I agree Anita that freehand makes it more individual. Is that a long list you’ve got? There are so many lovely makers to buy from! :-)

Have a great week yourself and maybe see you soon xx

Just taken part in my first Handmade Monday, its such a good idea and really motivational. Love the plaques, they look like they take a lot of patience.

    • Wendy says:

Thanks for taking part and it’s great that you find it motivational. Thanks for the comments on the plaques – I love doing them so I don’t feel like it needs patience! :-)
