Stolen Rabbit
I’m telling you about this here because I know this blog gets a lot of local readers. And I’m hoping that one of you may just know something about this or have seen something unusual.
My eight-year-old granddaughter’s black and white rabbit was stolen last night – along with the hutch. She is devastated.
They live in the Cinnamon Brow area of Warrington, have a walled garden, with a tall gate, which someone went into and left unlocked after taking the rabbit hutch along with the rabbit. They didn’t use a car and left a trail of sawdust, which (unfortunately) eventually petered out. Someone suggested they may have only wanted the hutch – in which case there may be a lost rabbit out there. She’s very tame.
The rabbit which was stolen is the mother of this one, which looks very much like her:
The school has been sympathetic and is planning to speak to the children. An awful thought, though, that one of them could end up with the knowledge that a rabbit has been stolen from a class mate and ended up in their own back garden.
My daughter is now so worried about her chickens that they are coming to live with mine in my garden.
What a world we live in.
However, the one good thing I have to say is this: it’s reassuring to know that the vast majority of people are sickened, saddened and disgusted by a crime like this. The support from people on Twitter has been amazing – even down to the unbelievably kind offer of a pair of baby guinea pigs complete with housing.
Thank you my online friends (some of whom are offline friends too!) - you do help to make things better!
Forgot to add – if you do happen to have any info please email: wendy@1stuniquegifts.co.uk or phone the number on the contact page (above). It would be very much appreciated – thank you.

I am shocked and sunned that someone would have the audacity to walk into another persons back garden and steal a family pet, who is obviously very much loved and cared for by a child. I would also be approaching the local press / tv / radio to see if they can help track down the thieves.
Please keep us updated with any progress
(( Hugs )) to your daughter, granddaughter and family. I hope the rabbit is returned soon and the perpetrators are caught !
Typo Correction : * shocked and stunned *
Thank you Francesca. My daughter is very much hoping that they get the rabbit back at this stage. We hadn’t thought about the local media so I will mention it to my daughter – thank you.
I will keep you informed on here if there are any developments.
Thanks for your comments xx
What an awful thing to happen – I feel so sorry for your daughter and grand-daughter as pets are part of the family, something which some people seem to forget when they do things like this!
By the way you have described the garden where the theft happened, it sounds like the hutch wasn’t really very visible which makes it seem that the person who took it has either been in the garden or seen when the hutch was purchased and taken into the garden originally. If they walked there, surely they can’t have come from far away or had a car parked nearby (someone would look very odd walking down the road in the middle of the night with a rabbit hutch under their arm).
I really hope you manage to catch the ‘thief’ (I had to tone down the description I wanted to use!) – the hutch can be replaced but its the fact there is an innocent animal out there which makes this such a horrific crime. I just hope whoever has her is looking after her and that she is home safe and well soon.
This sort of thing angers me so much as there is no need for it and innocent animals and children are just being hurt.

Thanks Ali for your comment. Yes, the garden has a high wall and it’s not easy to see in. At the back, if you turn one way, there is a road and if you turn the other way you follow a path through to a little park and more housing – that’s the way the sawdust trail went, which makes it likely it was carried to a local house. I’m sure they were seen but I guess people didn’t expect the hutch was stolen. Hutches are the kind of things that get given away and sold secondhand.
It was quite a big one so it would’ve taken two people to carry it. But it’s not the hutch that’s important here.
I’m so sorry to hear about the rabbit – your daughter and grand-daughter must be heartbroken. We make pets part of our family, not just part of our lives so it always hurts when something happens to them.
Surely someone saw something – a rabbit hutch is not a small thing to hide up your jumper! I really hope that the rabbit is found and brought home where it belongs.

Thanks Clare for stopping by and your kind comments.
I cannot believe your post.
How sick is this world for someone to do that.
Your poor grand daughter and daughter
Really hope the culprit is caught and that the rabbit appears safe and sound.
How can someone do that?? The theft is bad enough, but not knowning where the rabbit is or if she’s safe is awful. I really hope you find her. Your poor granddaughter
Thanks everyone for your kind comments. They are quite worried about the rabbit but are still hopeful.
I am so sorry to hear of the loss. The fact that someone could willingly do that to a child, let alone a family, is unthinkable. And the fact that they have not given any thought to the animal either is beyond shocking.
I truly hope this turns out for the better. I hate to think of both family and animal scared (and hopefully not in the animals case) suffering. Whilst I can’t do anything to help, my thoughts are with the family. I really hope this person is caught and brought to justice. Happy thoughts to you grand-daughter.
Thank you Kat. It is truly shocking. Thanks for your happy thoughts too, I like that
I’ve posted this on my Facebook page and my friends in the north west are sharing it. have you got your bun back yet? I’m so sorry for you. I have a fab rabbit and seeing this is spurring me to buy a lockable shed. There are some absolutely evil people out there.
Thank you Sarah for your comment and thanks so much also for sharing this. They have got the rabbit back – I did an update post here – the rabbit was handed in to the RSPCA after someone found it. The thieves had let it go because they wanted the hutch for their pregnant rabbit. It was a neighbour!! I hope there aren’t many people like this out there and hope your fab rabbit stays safe xx
